250125 My First

I was thinking back to the first computer I bought.

I was thinking about how we needed to stay up with technology one day in 1999. It came to me that computers were the way to the future.

I decided to go to the Best Buy store in Springfield and purchase a computer. Once there I decided on an HP desktop with windows 98 installed. I also bought an HP printer and then left the store $1100 poorer than when I went in there.

My new computer was top of the line at the time. It had a 286 mega byte processor. It was so much faster than anything with windows 95, (a real piece of junk).

Joyce and I also took night classes for Windows mail and another for Windows spreadsheets. We were ahead of the curve for the time.

Fast forward, computers today have 200 gigabyte processors today. That is 1000 times faster than a 200 megabyte processor.
Today, even a $200 computer comes with a 2 gigabyte processor. That’s 100 times faster than my 286 megabyte HP processor in 1999.

It seems today that the price of computers is dependant on the processor speed, and the size of the computer’s RAM memory and the size of its storage memory.

I may have a mistake or two in this post, but it’s reasonably accurate. My main purpose in the post was to show how much better home computers are today than they were when I bought my first computer 26 years ago.

One last thought, today our average smartphone is so advanced that many people no longer use a computer for personal use. We can use the smartphone for everything. I say we, but I’m old school. I use my smartphone to call or receive calls and I still use my computer to write to you.

  1. I'm with you Bill, I still prefer to use my computer to write and my phone to call my friends and family.

    1. I agree Chuck. The younger generation do everything on their phones. I can't text so fast as they can and Other than calling someone or getting a call. That's the only reason I have the phone.
