220904 A Minute

What is a minute?
A minute can be defined as a segment of time 60 seconds long or 1/60th of an hour, but is that what a minute is to us? A minute is a long time to hold your breath. It is also a long time to sit and watch a clock tick. When someone asks you to wait a minute, it’s never just one minute, it’s more like 2-3 minutes or more when they get back to you. When you are given a task and told to take a minute to do something, you can never do it in a single minute. If you have to be somewhere at a specific time, but you arrive 15 minutes or a single minute later, you are still late. If you arrive at a car crash a minute later, you are safe, a minute before and your car is wrecked. If you get to a hospital a minute after a loved one dies, you miss being able to say goodbye. In the past if you went to a girl's home to pick her up for a date and her mother told you to come in for a minute while she gets ready, it was never a minute. It was more like 10-15 minutes or more. When I started dating Joyce, she allowed a 5 minute window of time. If I was there 6 minutes late she was gone somewhere else. One minute was the difference between having a date with her and no date for the evening. A year ago in September Joyce and I were sitting in this office where I am now, talking. A minute later she was unconscious and I never got to say I love you before she was, in effect, gone forever. As far as I am concerned, a minute is far more than 60 seconds or 1/60th of an hour.
