211105 Sentinel, Music

My taste in music has changed over the years.

I’m going from my memory here in this piece about music, so if my experience is different from yours there could be several reasons for that. It seems to me that I grew up listening to rock and roll music in the very late fifties through the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties. That music usually had one or two singers with guitars and with drums later on. I realize that there were other options available with orchestras but they were not on my menu.

You may have seen those little photo booths that were at different places back in the sixties. This was me in 1963.

I was close to middle age before I discovered Frank Sinatra during the years when he sang with the big orchestras and I found that to be very good. Joyce was not that fond of Sinatra so for the most part we were still listening to Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, and other tunes she enjoyed, along with the old rock and roll I liked.

The dawn of the new century brought me senior citizen status, retirement and a different lifestyle. Along with more free time for music, shopping, drinking and casino trips we both enjoyed. One afternoon in Walmart I found a three CD set of big band music for just a few dollars. That changed my music tastes dramatically. Most of the tunes in the CDs were from World War Two years. Now I listen to them most of the time. I think the music from that time period is the best ever made.

Another thing I have found is that YouTube has countless musical tunes along with videos of the singers and orchestras I didn’t know existed. YouTube is my go to for music and music videos these days. Teenagers would not care for them, but I’m no longer a teen. I have found that I enjoy music from before I was born 76 years ago more than any other music. YouTube has everything a person could want for music.

In my recent post of November 3, 2021 I listed love songs that reminded me of Joyce, but those were not all of the songs that remind me of my love for her. There are more, like The Casinos group

with “Then You can tell me goodbye.” Another is
“Goodnight My Love.” This one has been sung by dozens of singers. As long as there are songs, there will be love songs and I will have memories of my love, Joyce.
