The Sentinel

All the news that's fit to print and some that's not.

People are Good

We are in hard times at this point, but I want to think the majority of us are basically decent and kind. I realize that normally good people can end up in bad situations that are not of their own doing. They have to do things they normally would not do, but are forced into it because of the situation. Every man/woman needs to do whatever it takes to support and protect his/her family.

I don't like to think about this, nor would you, but stop and think what you would do if you suddenly found yourself with no job, no income, no prospects. You still have a family to care for, a mortgage to pay for and a car payment. If you have an idea or a comment on what you think you would do, I would like to hear it.

Abe Lincoln

One of president Lincoln's famous quotes "A House Divided" was delivered in a speech on June 16, 1858. In it he said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." The speech was meant to unite the north and south, but the result was just the opposite of what he intended.

I could not find an exact date, just decades, when republicans went conservative and democrats went liberal. In the 1920's republicans were more liberal and democrats were more conservative. Into the 1960's the southern states were solid conservative democrats. In the 1970's they switched over to the republican party. There was a time when the congressmen and senators all lived in the D.C. area and they made friends across the aisles of those institutions. They broke bread together on weekends and were united in their goals to work for the country and not just for the party.

The Change

By the 1990's that all changed. Today this country is a house divided against itself and just as Lincoln said in 1858, unless things change in a hurry the division (which is greater than any since the civil war) this country will fall. I still have hope the good people of this country can reunite and return America to a shining city on a hill. The world will once again look to America as that beacon on the hill, the lighthouse in a storm.
