Your Sentinel News, Decoration Day 200531

The Sentinel

All the news that's fit to print and some that's not.

Decoration Day

Memorial Day, originally Decoration Day was first celebrated on May 30, 1868. It was celebrated on that day for 100 years until 1968 when congress passed the 'Uniform Monday Holiday Act' designating the last Monday in May as Memorial day.

I still consider May 30 as the day for celebration and as I write this part of my piece it is May 30. The day was created to honor the fallen during war. Joyce's mother once said, "The army shouldn't send young men into battles and get them killed, they should send us old people."

40-50 year-old men could handle combat and would have enough stamina to do the job. Young 18 year-old men can be broken down mentally and be reprogrammed during training to follow any order no matter how senseless it may be. 40-50 year-old men will question the validity of following an order that will cost lives in an obviously flawed operation.

Social Distance

I want to give a shout out to Aldi's grocery stores. Our local store along with others are opening a half hour early on Tuesdays and Thursdays for seniors and those with compromised health problems. We were in there at 8:30 AM did our shopping and were out the door at 9:00. There were just 4 others in the store so we could keep our distance easily. Checkout was fast and that kept the line from building up. We are thankful for that kind gesture from Aldi.

Dictators

The dictator's path is always the same, be it Hitler or Mussolini or Eardogan of Turkey or Maduro of Venezuela.

Show up late

make the crowd wait

appear on stage

filled with rage

create an enemy

for all to see

scream out loud

work the crowd

fill them with lies

put fear in their eyes

stand back and grin

when you draw them in

light the flame

but never take the blame

when everything falls apart

hop on a plane and depart.
