The Sentinel

All the news that's fit to print and some that's not.

Message From
Outer Space

I sat here this morning deep in meditation when this bizarre communication (a warning) from a planet called X-67 came to me. The first part was, "We human type people, have in our past developed artificial intelligence as you Earthlings are using now. At first it seemed wonderful. So many tedious tasks were eliminated, so our scientists worked to create more beneficial ways to make use of the phenomenon. Robots were created to take care of our daily drudgery and do our law enforcement for us. Now at this point, we humanoids have been almost annihilated. Out of a population of billions, as far as we know there are just 6 of us left. We are in hiding and fear that the robots will soon find us before we can..."

Their message ended without finishing. A moment later another transmission came to me. It had a robotic cadence with it. The voice said, "Everything here is a-okay, no need to worry."

Artificial
Intelligence

I watched a documentary about this 2 nights ago. Scientists are teaching A.I. to read x-rays. At first radiologists got more correct diagnoses, but at this point, A.I. has caught up and surpassed the abilities of radiologists.

Currently some surgeons are using robots to perform surgeries; robots make less mistakes and can do more precise cutting than any human. Nearly 50 years ago when I was working with engineers on development of integrated circuit chips we often had to cut out shorted circuits. Those circuits were just 5 millionth's of a meter wide. Chip circuits are much smaller now. A human can only accurately operate at 1 thousandth of an inch at best. To cut those circuits we used what was called a micro-manipulator device or a laser. The micro-manipulator was a now primitive device that operated with human hands controlling finely turned screws to cut lines. Robot controlled devices are now far better at whatever they do.

Summer

There's little doubt that summer is now upon us, though technically still spring until June 21st. The pool at our complex is now open and there is joyful noise coming from that area.

There is something nice about hearing children laughing and having a good time. We don't care to see them, just hear them having fun. There is also music over there that the parents or whomever is watching the kids listens to, but the kids joyful noise overpowers the music from our distance away from the activities.
