Snow and a little story 181113

I ran across this picture and it brought back a memory.

This was taken on a work day after a huge snowfall. Notice the plowed pavement here is only one lane wide. That is important to the story.
I went out to the road that morning and saw the farm road had that lane cleared, so I went back to the house thinking the road crew had made the initial swipe and would soon be coming back down the road to finish the job. Joyce and I got ready to go to work. we left in tandem, her in the car and me in the truck heading to the state highway. when we got there we saw the state highway was packed with snow and no road crew had even begun to clear it. There was no way to turn around with all the snow plowed up on our farm road, so we headed toward town. There was nothing to determine where the highway was, except for two ruts carved out by someone's big 4-wheel drive truck; we pulled onto the highway and followed the ruts hoping to get into our small town and not meet anyone coming the opposite direction. It was 2 miles of heart-pounding excitement wondering if we would make it. We did meet another big 4-wheel drive truck and that gent had an opportunity to move over to a driveway and let us pass. We were pushing the top few inches of snow all the way to town and if we had to pull over we would both have been stuck. Once we got to town the roads had been cleared and we made it to work.
What had happened on our farm road was this; our neighbor was a dairy farmer so he had to have his morning milking picked up by the big tanker truck that came by every day. The deep snow would have prevented the driver from coming up the road and make the pickup. Our neighbor fired up his tractor with the big front-end scraper and cleared the one lane for the milk tanker truck to get to his farm. The state road crew didn't get around to the state highway in our direction until near dark that day. By the time we were headed home there was still an inch or two of packed snow on the state highway, but we did make it home safe and sound and no worse for the wear and scare.
