In service since 1955, the B-52 is still a weapon in the U.S. Air Force. It is a sub-sonic bomber capable of long range and gigantic bomb loads. These bad boys were designed to blast Russia into oblivion during the cold war. There were nuclear-armed bomber wings in the air from 1955 until 1992, 24 hours a day/365 days a year, ready to strike. If you have never seen the movie "Doctor Strangelove," (a black comedy about a rogue general who sends a B-52 wing "the go code" to bomb Russia) do yourself a favor and watch it. These big boys would take off from Guam in the sixties, fly to Vietnam and drop hundreds of thousands of bombs over north Vietnam. It was a sight to see them take off and on return land, one after another.
Bombs over Vietnam
This looks like a scene from Doctor Strangelove.
This is an array of what the B-52 can deliver. The picture is before cruise missiles.
I think you can agree this is/was quite a weapon.
