The Sentinel, Thinking 201101

The sun came up at the same time this morning as it did yesterday, yet the clocks all say it was an hour different than yesterday. Hmm, I wonder which I should trust? One of them is not telling the truth. I suppose I am old-fashioned because I’m going to say I believe the sun. This daylight savings time seems phony to me. What do we really save? Is there really an hour added somewhere? Does the old sun actually stay high in the sky for an hour longer or an hour shorter? I compare daylight savings to my savings account at the bank. It’s there for the same time every day, but it never really changes because my interest rate is nil. In that respect, both daylight savings and my savings account never really change or add more.
Our November curse. Joyce’s father died in November. My father died in November. All three of my cruises (separation from my loved ones) in the navy started in November. Joyce had to put her mother into Hospice in November. Joyce had a rear-end collision in our Volkswagen bug in November. The car was repaired, but it was never right after that. Our refrigerator quit one November Thanksgiving when it was full of food. The repair company gave us a loaner that froze everything and it was full of mice that infiltrated our home. It took weeks to finally catch all of them. November first was the time I fell and ended up with a subdural hematoma that required surgery. One November I had to have our beloved border collie put down and that was horrific. I graduated navy boot camp on the day our president John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22 of 1963. I think maybe November for us should be called “The Ides of March.”
Why are people with perfectly good names like William called Bill, John called Jack, Charles called Chuck, Elizabet called Betty, my own Ann (whom I named that specifically so she wouldn’t have any other name) ended up being called Annie ? Am I the only one who thinks about things like that?
