The Sentinel 200517, Old Men, Thoughts and Actions, Scratchers

The Sentinel

All the news that's fit to print and some that's not.
Old Men

Some of us old timers have forgotten so much that we used to know. Even if we remembered what we knew back then it is not worth much these days, because things have changed. This all seems to be sudden to me, but I certainly could be wrong. People seem to be the same as always, some delightful, some a-holes.

Dealing with people seems to never change, so I can still do that. I am referring more to math and the technical things I used to know. What I did then is no longer valid with the new technology and it is distressing. I used to fix things, but now the software and hardware is different. Things are no longer made to be repaired anymore. I am still using the HTML code I used 20 years ago and it still works. My code runs about 20-30 lines, but when I publish a post and then look at google's source code there's almost 1200 lines there.

Being an old man, sometimes I forget to zip up after, well you know. That just happens to old men. I am not worried about that being Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's is when I begin to forget to unzip before, well you know.

Thoughts and Actions

This reporter has stated before that every action begins with a single thought. That was true then and is true today. Where am I going with this? Here is my thinking on the subject: the seeds for our thoughts come from what we see and hear. If we listen to radio commentators or TV personalities constantly telling us how bad things are in this country, we begin to believe what they say and that belief becomes our outlook on the current situation in this country. When those people are spewing discord and hate we begin to think as they say and do.

World War One ended and people thought war was a thing of the past. They thought things would then get better and they did until 1929. People were making money in the stock market and having good times, even shoeshine boys were basking in the glory, but then some folks got the idea things had go go bad soon. Those folks started a panic in the markets that led the nation into the great depression. Things were harsh and everyone believed it would never end. And then along came a president that knew he could turn the nation around. It didn't happen in a single day, it took years, but he convinced the nation that it could and would be done and it happened.

My thought is that right now we need to believe that no matter how dark things appear at the moment, things will change and the sun will shine once more as long as we believe it will.

Scratchers

I bought some scratchers for Joyce 2 weeks ago. Out of 10 tickets, She won a free play ticket. So that meant she got a 10% return and that made me remember we used to get a slightly better return playing slot machines in Oklahoma. Days ago I was refreshing our alcohol supply and saw a scratcher ticket there with the title "Queen of Hearts." I did not intend to purchase a ticket, but the queen of hearts made me think of the queen of my heart. I acquired the ticket and gave it to my queen. She did not win anything, but I cut the top of the ticket off and now have it on my writing desk so I am constantly reminded of her fine qualities.

My queen has always been by my side
Not in a castle but in a small apartment where we reside
We've been together in good times and bad
And what a wonderful time we've had
Now we're old and gray
But still are happy for one more day
Some day death will break us apart
Leaving one of us with a broken heart
