The Sentinel

All the news that's fit to print and some that's not.

The Government

It seems to this reporter that the government is busy rearranging chairs on the Lido deck while the Titanic is sinking. The history of the thought to be unsinkable ship Titanic caused the captain of that fateful ship to travel full speed to set a record for trans-Atlantic trips that caused him to be reckless through icy waters. The captain and those on board to suffered the effect of hitting an iceberg in foggy weather at full speed. That iceberg ripped open the side of the ship causing the ship to sink in a short time causing massive loss of life.

Right now the government wants to rush and set a record for recovery, just as back then, with little regard for survivors or those who will die in the Covid-19 epidemic. Being a senior citizen at this time, I would like to live through this epidemic or should I more correctly call it this pandemic because that is what it is?

This country is ill prepared for a pandemic. Our health and emergency departments have been gutted and replaced with people ill suited to head those agencies. I think it is time to wake up and force some necessary changes. That said, I have little hope of that happening in the near future.

Business

Those entrepreneurs who open big businesses in normal times take a risk for a great reward. That is the way this country grew great. Now that those entrepreneurs have made bad choices in the pursuit of ever more profits they have made mistakes and have collapsed into bankruptcy multiple times in the last 33 years, this government has bailed them out every time and is set to do it all over again. With no fear of failure the banks, the Boeing company, the car companies have gone headlong into risky endeavors that have caused them to suffer the same as the Titanic except that with the government backing those mistakes they haven't died like the passengers on the Titanic did because the government has righted the ship for them.

So far today's news reporting may sound cynical, but we are just reporting what is happening and has happened in the last 33 years. This reporter is reminded of the words of Winston Churchill during World War Two. "America will always do the right thing, after they try everything else." This has been true since that war and will be in the future. We will get things right, eventually.

Slush Funds

Slush funds are common in any government to pay off cronies and buy favors and votes. The evidence has been exposed at times, for instance a congressman (Years ago) caught by the FBI with $100,000 in his home freezer.

This reporter admits investing in a slush fund on two different navy cruises. Both turned out profitable, so I understand why governments utilize them, but just like I was wrong in participating in a fund, so also are governments around the world. Am I sorry for my actions? Yes! Are governments sorry? No! To quote from the movie Godfather, "It's not personal, just business."
