Her professor was lecturing on a distant planet in another solar system called the Milky Way. It had been discovered centuries ago by a space probe studying the known universe. The planet was the third from the sun in that system and at one time had the necessary elements for human beings to live in abundance and enjoy a happy existence. The planet was now covered in a perpetual shroud. The planet's atmosphere was investigated by the space probe and it was found to be a combination of heavy carbon dioxide and radio-active materials. The scientific consensus was that the carbon-dioxide began to choke the planet's ability to sustain life there and those left after most had died from starvation went to war using nuclear weapons that ended up killing all that were left.
Ayn was distressed to hear something like that could happen. She sat in her living space for hours after class, wondering how anything like that could happen on a planet that should have lived and thrived. She wondered how could those beings allow that to happen.
In her next class she asked her professor how something like that could possibly happen? Her professor had no good answer. All he could say was it should have never happened.
