When I re-enlisted in the navy things were quite different. We were living in navy towns and at that time all enlisted men were in the same boat (forgive the pun). None made much more money than the others. We all had the same problems, the same joys the same politics. There were funny navy stories in abundance and we shared them. The wives also had many things in common, so they and we sailors got along well. We had more friends than ever and we had family picnics, grownup parties that were legendary! Some, most parties lasted all night long. we would take the kids and line them up on the beds like chord-wood and they would sleep all night long.
There is only constant in the entire universe and that is change. Everything changes and changes are continuous. In the old days change came a lot slower. Today things change more rapidly than I can keep up with. I used to think my grandpa lived at the best time ever because he saw so many things come into his life, electricity, lights, radio, television, a revolution to automobiles from wagons, prohibition, two world wars, the great depression. Today I am seeing things even more wonderful. Transistors to integrated circuits, navy super carriers, satellites, high speed internet, cars that can drive themselves, big screen televisions that are superior and light weight compared to those with small screens that were bulky, heavy and generally unreliable.
I remember when I was 16 telling my parents that as soon as I was 18 I was moving out and never going to live with them again. It was not because we quarreled or anything like that. I just wanted to live on my own. I missed my goal when I spent one more month with them after I was 18. I am wondering about young people today that live on a free ride from their parents through college and then graduate and move right back in with their parents, still living off their parent's hard work. I won't exactly say it is entirely wrong, I just don't understand the thinking or the situation.
I spend a lot of time at home these days and have acquired a weird habit. I find it interesting to catch a look at my digital clock and find all of the numbers displaying the same digits, such as 111, 222, 333. There is only one number that is the same for all 4 digits. Can you think what that number is?
