Free seems to be a magical word to the American public. Companies advertise free gifts all the time. The free gift is always dependent on making a purchase. That means to me that the gift is not free because you have to spend money to get it. If you have to spend $20 dollars to get a free gift (many of which border on useless) it is not free; because it cost you money to get it.
Companies that offer free gifts have employees. Those employees have to process your order. The company has to pay those employees. That costs money. The company uses money from your order to pay them and that money comes from you, the buyer.
A popular ploy is advertising "buy one, get one free." Is that really free or is it nothing but a discount on the two items you purchased? One of my favorites is "buy one and get 50% off on the second item." If the full price on the first item is $10 the second item is then $5, you paid paid $7.50 each and did you really need 2 of the items?
