Frost flowers 181107


      Frost flower formation is caused by freezing conditions in the air when the ground is not yet frozen. The sap left in the stems freezes and expands causing the stems to split with thin cracks and as the water seeps out it freezes in the frozen air. The water is drawn out through the thin cracks and that forms the petals of the flowers.

      These pictures were taken by me some years ago. It is that time of year again, so I thought they might be interesting to see once more.
      These are so delicate you cannot pick them up.
      No two that I ever found were alike.
      In all the years on the farm this only happened 2 times.
