Requiem for the CD and the DVD
You may or may not have noticed, but the CD and the DVD are soon to vanish from production. Soon computer companies will no longer produce optical drives necessary to play CD or DVD. The future is in content stored in what we call the cloud. Today anything you buy from Amazon is downloaded to your computer for use and stored in the cloud. If you lose your copy, it is always there in the cloud and you can download it anytime you want to do so. Content providers like Amazon or Netflix or HBO are already or will be soon providing streaming video whenever you care to watch.
I have already transferred all of my 400 or so music CDs to my computer and sold the CDs. I have transferred all of my home videos, music and writing from the last 17 years on to a single 128-GB USB flash drive and tossed a stack of CD and DVDs that held them. The future is here today.
Do you remember when we used floppy disks? Try to find one now. We may not like where things are going, but progress will not be stopped. I mentioned earlier that music and movies will be in the cloud, but you can also store any documents you may want to keep there too. Google drive or any of the other companies like Dropbox will store your content in the cloud. Things change and we must change with them or be left behind. It may not be what we want to do, but it will be what we have to do.
