Blooms and Fruits on the Farm Today

This closeup is the bloom of a gray dogwood tree. Later in the season the trees will have berries on them that birds and turkeys love to eat. I have seen deer over there, but I am not sure if they eat the berries or just sample the leaves.

This is just part of the row of gray dogwoods in the pasture. I started with 8 pencil-sized sticks with a tiny root system and spaced them 8 feet apart. Early on when we mowed, we could make two passes between each tree. Now it is a solid wall more than 70 feet long and 8 feet wide.

This is crown vetch in bloom. I got this to put on a hillside to prevent erosion. It has and it has spread over a wide area.

These purple leaf sand cherries do not fruit every year and it is just as well because while the fruit has a tempting appearance, one bite and you will know why it is called sand cherry. It is not of course actual sand, but it sure feels like it is.

These are the first of the pears. They start out looking like this, but turn to a pale green as they grow and look like a normal pear.

The apple trees have set fruit and they are good eating, but few ever get to our table, because the local wildlife enjoys them very much and they enjoy them before the apples are ripe enough for us to enjoy.

The cherries are nowhere near ripe, but i am sure the birds will start in on them in a week or two.
