The F-117 was the first stealth fighter developed in the US. It was actually designed for air to ground attack instead of air combat as an F designation would imply. These were used in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and even as far back as Panama. The F-117 as sleek as it looks was a sub-sonic aircraft, limited by wing design and low thrust engines (due to smaller inlet and exhaust ports).
The F-117 was retired in 2008, although unlike most retired aircraft sitting out in the Arizona desert, the F-117 planes were disassembled and put away in climate-controlled hangars, just in case they might be needed. The cancellation and retirement was due to newer computer aided designs and to save money for development of the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Both of those planes are supposed to be able to deliver bombs and work as airborne interceptors. Time will tell.
