Hampton Manor or Republic Palms

This is the layout of a one bedroom in the new Hampton Manor being built just a short walk from my current apartment.

The room is 516 square feet.

I’m currently living in a 920 square foot apartment that’s almost 2 times the size of the 1 bedroom pictured above.

The bedroom and bathroom appear to take up a bit more than 50% of the apartment.

The living room seems very small even for the little bit of furniture I have and use.

To the left of the living room seems like wasted space. The big closet there would never be used by me.

The kitchenette looks very nice. I could heat up a snack and the little reefer would hold a few beers and hopefully ice cream, because I’ll be across the street from a store that sells ice cream.

I’m trying to figure out which would be best for me, move there or stay where I am.

There, meals would be provided, but the cost of the home may be a lot more than where I’m living and buying my groceries.

For those of you who read this, I’m interested in what you readers think.

  1. Didn't you say you wouldn't be able to leave the premises whenever you pleased? Or did I dream that? More like a nightmare I fear. I know you'd enjoy meeting with people so that's a plus. I'm leaning towards you staying put because it seems you are doing better now that you're settled into the "new" apartment.

    1. Kathy, I did say that I didn't know if I could leave without permission. That would be a killer for me, not being able to take my walks. Another thing I thought of is, I like to watch my TV late into the night. I fall asleep for a couple of hours, Wake up make some coffee and watch more TV. I could have a neighbor in the room next to me that would whine about my TV being on late at night.

    2. With both Independent, and Assisted Living, you are free to come and go as you please. For patients with dementia and similar conditions, there are Memory Care facilities that are, indeed, lockdown facilities for safety reasons. With my mother, we had direct experience with all those environments.

If Bill were to wander off, they would know where to find him - at the beer store!

Bill, while the place may be smaller than your current apartment, don’t forget that you will have a variety of Common Areas to enjoy as well:

    - Outdoor patio
    - Dining room
    - Activity Room
    - Library
    - Snack area

Mom’s place even had a self serve ice cream machine with two flavors in the snack area.

So, really, you will have far more space to enjoy, and people to enjoy it with, than you currently have.

  3. I tend to agree w/Kevin. People will generally make you feel better, however there will always be a few "pests." Costs will probably be more but in addition to food, staff will tend to make sure you show up somewhat regularly to show them you aren't sick. Also many of this sort of facility provide a "Bus/Van" and offer local outings for residents at nominal costs. Also, you can always go out of the facility w/friends if desired. Some also have a "cocktail hour" on some schedule to meet others.

  4. I forgot to mention you should also ask about future Medicare/Medicaid availability.
