Some lucky sailors get to see
One thing in the east, Asahi or Tsingtao were both delightful beers, of which I would partake while on liberty.
Once on a train back from Tokyo, everyone was staring at me. They all had masks on their faces; I did not. I knew I was about to sneeze; I reached for my hankerchief, but I was too late. The train car full of Japs stared at me with lazer eyes. I thought for a moment they might throw me off the tain between scheduled stops, in other words, into a binjo ditch (Binjo ditchs were open air toilets for those living in the poor areas .
Every one of the seven seas
Sadly that was not available for me
I only saw half of them you see
The other half was not to be
I was stuck in the far east
Compared to the Mediterranean
The far east is by far the least
Food in the east, noodles, rice and raw fish
Instead of a delicious pasta dish
The Mediterranean food would have been my wish
Japan was interesting in the sixties. US dollars exchanged for thousands of Yen, more than would fit in a wallet. The bad thing was I would be paying piles of Yen for a few beers.
This was just 20 years after WW-2 and they hadn't forgotten about that.
