I decided to quit driving. I took my daughter with me the licensing office and a clerk there flew through the title transfer from me to her fast! The clerk was wonderful! Next I went over to the driver’s license area, surrendered my driver’s license and got a state ID card.
I will never drive again and never own a car. I have had a car since I was 16, but now at 79, I know I am no longer a good driver. There are people my age that are good drivers, I'm just not one of them.
Driving here in my small town is hazardous with people not paying attention to their driving or little things like 4 way boulevard stop signs. Driving in Springfield scares me even more. It seems like everyone is in a heated rush to get to work, to go home or to Walmart or wherever they want to go.
People are so involved with their cell phones they aren’t always paying attention to their driving. I have to admit that I had a tough time keeping my mind on driving and not looking at trees and homes as I passed by them, but then, I’m playing the age card.
Now that I’m forever foot bound, I can stop and admire trees, mowed lawns, well kept homes and homes not well maintained. I can walk or stop and look at my surroundings. Walking is the best thing older people can do for themselves.
One last thing, I am situated where I can walk to the grocery store, the beer store and to Walmart, the everything store. If by chance I can no longer walk to those places, I can have my groceries delivered. I have planned everything, but the best laid plans can still have flaws. I’m a trooper and I’ll figure out how to survive no matter what happens.
Congratulations on your new reality. I too feel in danger as I pass people staring down at their phone. It would also be nice to glance at the scenery from time to time, however we have already addressed the morons.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughtful reply. I agree that people are obsessed with their cell phones, even when they are driving on crowded streets. To me, a cell phone is nothing more than a hand held device used to make or receive a telephone call. I suppose that puts me in the tiniest of minorities. My phone is not filled with pictures or short videos. I do not go shopping using my phone. There were times when my phone would ring while I was driving. I never once answered an incoming call. I always waited until I returned home to call back. In reply to your initial comment, I am in a new reality. I hadn't thought about my new reality, but I agree I am smack dab in the middle of it!
