Before the diet drinks started I drank regular soft drinks with sugar in them. I weighed 138 pounds and was six feet tall. I was as skinny as I could be. When diet drinks came along I tried them and I liked them so I gave up regular soft drinks. For the next 42 years I only drank diet drinks. During that time I went from 138 to 205 pounds. My eating habits changed, when my soft drinks changed. I know several other people who had the same experience.
The sweetener in diet soft drinks is Aspartame, a chemical sweetener that tastes delicious in soft drinks. The problem with Aspartame is that it causes a person to become hungry, so it makes you increase everything you eat. That is why I gained so much weight. Once I quit drinking diet drinks I started losing weight again. Now at my age, 78, I am back down to 140 pounds while I still consume regular meals. I have never been on a strict diet regimen for very long. I mean a week or more. I feel good and I am healthy for my age. I am not as strong as I once was, but then not many people are when they get as old as I am. I can still lift and move furniture as I do regularly for my indoor exercise.
I also practice Yoga, Tai Chi (for seniors) and meditation, something I would recommend to anyone.
