Grandpa and me in 1965
I watched a movie today titled “Memorial Day” on Prime video.
The movie brought back one memory after another. A young boy found his grandpa’s army footlocker and started looking through it. He took it to his grandpa to ask about what happened. There were two memories in that trunk, one was the boy sitting at his grandpa’s knee asking him about what this all meant. It made me think about all the time I sat with my grandpa asking him questions about everything under the sun and he always answered every question. The second memory was when I found my father’s footlocker from WW-2. I got to ask him basically the same questions. My mother despised that footlocker because it had several girls' names spread across the top of it. I assume those were girls he dated before mom. The boy’s grandfather had an old rosary in the locker which the boy asked about. That reminded me of when I enlisted in the navy. My grandfather gave me a rosary to have with me. I carried that rosary in my pocket everywhere I traveled for those 11 years. I believe it protected me in some dangerous situations I found myself in. Once on the flight deck of the Kitty Hawk I avoided a plane crash. Two times in the Philippines I stared down the barrel of .45 caliber pistols in different situations. That rosary protected me in the past. I believe it will in the future. I still have that rosary by my bedside.
