210626 Spoons

I am thinking that you have never read a blog dedicated to spoons. I know I have never thought much about them.

Spoons are the first thing we use to learn how to eat solid food. Place settings on a table always have a spoon there. I cannot think of anything that I can eat with a spoon that I don’t enjoy, things such as ice cream, soup and best of all chili, or chocolate pudding. Spoons are a friendly kitchen utensil, unlike forks and knives that can harm a person. Many a person with a pan filled with soapy dishwater has reached in to grab another item to wash and ended up cutting their finger on a knife. If anyone using a knife happens to drop said knife there is an automatic response to try and catch it. That ends worse than having the knife hit the floor, unless of course you have bare feet and stop the knife with a toe or an instep.

I had prepared my hot cereal for breakfast this morning and as I waited for it to cool, I looked at my spoon. I don’t ever remember seeing my reflection in a spoon before. As you well know a spoon has a concave side (the business side) and a convex side. The concave side showed my reflection upside down and smaller that I am. The convex side had the image right side up but it made me look bigger than I am. I vote for all mirrors to be made in a convex style so we all look slimmer. So what if we see ourselves upside down, I have a mug that I don’t like to see anyway.

One more thing about spoons, there is a card game with spoons that is fun to play. The cards are shuffled and 4 cards go to each player. The deck is placed on the table and one card is turned up to begin play. There are spoons placed in the middle of the table and there is always one less spoon than there are players. The game starts and each player in turn has the option of picking up the top discard or an unknown from the stack. The player then has to discard one card from that player's hand so there are always 4 remaining cards in one’s hand. As soon as the first player has 4 of a kind the player lays down the hand hand and the discard and picks up a spoon. At that point everyone else at the table reaches for a spoon. That is where the fun begins because hastily trying to grab a spoon can scatter the pile and the scramble is sometimes hilarious. The way we played the game was the first person to not grab a spoon is out. A spoon is removed from the table and round 2 begins. The winner is the last person who grabs the single spoon that was left. Part of the fun in the game is how smooth and quietly one can lay down the cards and slowly select a spoon. Others at the table may be busy looking at their cards and trying to figure out how best to get 4 of a kind, but when other players start bumping spoons the distracted player quickly tries to reach for a spoon. There are no holds barred when it comes to a spoon scramble. The more players available, make the game more fun.
