260815 Long Ago But Not Far Away

It was a bad day at black rock.

As I remember, it was 20 years ago. The boss announced an unscheduled all hands meeting. We all gathered and sat down in the warehouse of Litton ACD, waiting to hear what the meeting was all about.

In came the clowns from California. The Californicators climbed up on the stage, they said the plant was closing and everyone would soon be out of work. They turned on a dime, left one woman to explain the bad news while they left for the airport and flew back to California.

Everyone was in shock, tears were shedding all around. Some had been working at Litton for 40 years. Others graduated High School, walked down the street, went to work for Litton and had never worked anywhere else.
The woman the Californicators left to explain everything to us was very nice and explained what we would get in severance pay and how the plant would slowly shut down.

I remember driving by the site months later; the building was razed and buried underground. That day was almost as bad as the day we were told we were out of work.

There were a lot of good people at Litton. They were friends and many of them still read my blogs. I worked there for 19 years and 6 months. Many others worked there a lot longer than I did. It was a good place to work.
